Begin with the dry wines and then try sweeter wines at the end of the tasting. Look at the color,on a firm surface (if its available) swirl it to release the nose, sniff it, taste it (hold it in your mouth and move it around. Spit or swallow, either is appropriate. Be certain to rinse with a small amount of wine before you move on to one drastically different. The person pouring it will pour a tiny bit in your glass, swirl it and dump it in the bucket, then begin the process again. Overall, have fun and you might want to bring a pad and pen to take notes. Also, collect business cards and follow up with favorite wineries as I have found most people in this field love enthusiastic oenophiles and they may keep you abreast of specialty wines and inform of you select tastings and etc.
