I've lived in the San Jose area - So, Northern California.
I don't know about LA, but since you have no answers yet, I can suggest that you check out the Central Coast: Paso Robles area - including Santa Barbara.

Napa Valley/Somona County are more than an hour north of San Francisco - so out of your reach - but the Central Coast may be within your reach.

I just did a quick Google on Wine Tour in Paso Robles and found: http://www.gogrape.com/paso_robles/

Have fun!

Temecula ...... Take the 55 Frwy to the 91 Freeway (into Riverside County); go South on the 15 Freeway, about 35 miles to the 79 exit (east) in Temecula. There are a bunch of wineries there, that have tastings, and places to eat; and entertainment on the weekends. There are festivals too. You can probably get brochures on-line from the city of Temecula....
