wine is not really 100% appreciated by itself, it is supposed to be drunk accompanying a meal, so your choice of red or white depends on the food and how is it prepared. it is not as simple as red goes with meat, white with fish.

the lighter the food, the lighter the wine:

reds:
pinot noir - light and acid
sangiovese (chianti) - light and acid; ideal 4 italian food (bolognesa)
merlot, malbec, carmenere - medium body, rustic grapes. ideal with barbecue
syrah, cabernet sauvignon - full body

whites:
sauvignon blanc-light and acid
riesling - sweet
chardonnay - light to medium
gewustraminer - aromatic, sweet. great with thai, indian, mexican (spicy) food

remember: "the best wine is the one you like best"

cheers

I prefer red for the bold flavor.
But it really depends on what you're eating.

For me it's about what kind of event I'm at or what I'm doing. If I'm at home just unwinding and reading a book I go with red usually. If I'm out at a party I usually go with white. My rule is if it's mellow I go with red. If it's "happening" I go with white.

Hey wine consumers! There is good news for all of you. It has been scientifically proved that red wine is beneficial for heart and the white wine is good for lungs. Drinking either red wine or white wine will increase the HDL, or good, cholesterol.
